Marine debris is a huge issue today. Littering in the oceans is not environmental friendly and can harm many of the animals living in the ocean. Littering can be fatal to these organisms. Marine debris is trash and other solid materials that enter the ocean and end up on our beaches. Over 100 million marine animals are killed each year due to marine debris. Many turtles have been killed from plastic bags or fishing lines in their stomachs. The plastic gets trapped in their stomachs which prevents them from swallowing food. Many things get caught in turtles mouths that you probably wouldn't even think of. For example, a helium balloon. What goes up must come down right? Well when the balloons come down, 60% of the time they deflate and land in the ocean. The turtles or other animals mistake the balloon for food and the balloon material is not edible which gets caught in there throats and leads to death. The Florida law states that "in or on any freshwater, lake, river, canal or coastal water of the state, when litter is thrown or disregarded from the boat, the operator or owner of the boat, shall be deemed in violation of this section." Littering can cost you up to a 200 dollar fine, depending on how much you tossed. Marine debris is a huge issue and effects the health and safety of marine animals.
